Frequently asked
How do I take care of a new tattoo?
See our full aftercare guide at /aftercare. The short version: leave the wrap on as long as your artist tells you, wash gently with unscented soap and lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply a thin layer of unscented lotion or aftercare balm two or three times a day for the first couple of weeks. Keep it out of direct sun, pools, rivers, and bathtubs until it is fully healed.
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
Surface healing usually takes about two weeks. Deeper healing, where the color fully settles and the skin feels normal again, takes closer to a month. In Sacramento's dry summer heat, healing on larger pieces can stretch a little longer.
Do you do touch-ups?
Yes. If a fully healed tattoo needs a touch-up, we offer a free touch-up within the first few months as long as you followed the aftercare. Text us a healed photo and we'll get you back in.
Do you take walk-ins?
Yes. Walk-ins are welcome during open hours and they're the fastest way to get tattooed. If it's busy we'll give you an honest wait time or set you up with the next available artist. For anything bigger than a few hours, text (916) 775-3358 ahead so we can plan the session.
How do I book a tattoo?
Text (916) 775-3358 with a short description of what you want, the size and placement, and any reference images. We reply within a day. You can also DM @broadwaydept on Instagram, though text is fastest.
Do you require a deposit?
For scheduled appointments, yes. The deposit goes toward the final price of your tattoo, and the amount depends on the size of the piece. Walk-ins do not require a deposit. The deposit is non-refundable on a no-show, and it rolls forward if you reschedule at least 48 hours in advance.
What happens if I need to reschedule?
Let us know at least 48 hours ahead by texting (916) 775-3358 and your deposit rolls forward to the new date. Inside 48 hours, or for a no-show, the deposit is forfeited and a new one is required to rebook.
What if I don't have a design yet?
That's normal. Text us the idea, any references you like, and the placement and size you have in mind. Your artist will sketch something custom and walk you through it before any needle touches skin.
Is Broadway Dept. licensed?
Yes. We operate under the California Safe Body Art Act with single-use needles, a full autoclave setup, and bloodborne pathogens training. Our artists are registered with the Sacramento County Department of Public Health.
Do you tattoo minors?
No. California law requires you to be 18 or older to get a tattoo, and we do not make exceptions regardless of parental consent.
Can I get a tattoo while pregnant or breastfeeding?
We do not tattoo clients who are pregnant or actively breastfeeding. It is a general safety and healing precaution, not a judgment. We will be here when you are ready.
What should I do the day before my appointment?
Sleep well, drink water, and eat a real meal a couple of hours before you come in. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, skip aspirin and ibuprofen the day of since they thin your blood, and moisturize the area the night before so your skin is in good shape.
What should I wear?
Wear something comfortable that gives your artist easy access to the area being tattooed. Dark colors are smart since a little ink can end up on your clothes. Do not wear anything you would be devastated to stain.
Can I bring someone with me?
A single support person is fine for most sessions. Please do not bring a whole group. The tattoo floor itself is kept clear of extra people so the artist can work safely and focus on your piece.
How much does a tattoo cost?
Pricing depends on size, placement, style, and how long a piece takes. Small walk-in designs start at our shop minimum. For larger or custom work, text (916) 775-3358 with details and we'll give you an honest ballpark before you commit.
What is your shop minimum?
Our shop minimum covers setup, a fresh sterile needle, and the artist's time for the smallest piece we'll do. The exact amount varies by artist. Text us with what you want and we'll confirm before you come in.
Do you have an hourly rate?
Yes, for longer sessions and custom work. Hourly rates vary by artist. Some multi-session pieces are priced per session or as a flat project rate once we've scoped the design together.
What payment methods do you accept?
Cash is always welcome. Most artists also accept card and common mobile payment apps. If you want to avoid any surprise at the end of the session, confirm with your artist when you sit down.
Does getting a tattoo hurt?
It depends on placement and on you. Ribs, hands, feet, and spine tend to be sharper. Upper arms, outer thighs, and calves are usually easier. Most people describe it as uncomfortable rather than unbearable, and breathing through the first few minutes is the hardest part.
How long will my tattoo take?
Small pieces are often under an hour including setup. A medium custom piece runs two to four hours. Large sleeves and back pieces are multi-session and can total ten hours or more over several visits. Your artist will give you a time estimate once the design is set.
